Pepe Mujica spoke after the ruling against the Uruguayan State

Former President José Mujica, in recent statements, reflected on the legal outcome against the Uruguayan State linked to the Pluna airline, emphasizing that the company's situation was unsustainable long before its liquidation in 2012, during his term. Mujica described Pluna as an entity that "had been dead for a decade," highlighting the difficulties deepened by the alliance with Brazilian airline Varig and subsequent decisions that he said only made the situation worse.

The verdict, which resonates in the country's political and economic sphere, has revived the debate on the decisions and policies taken by successive governments regarding the management of state-owned enterprises and their impact on the national economy. Mujica, addressing the issue, acknowledged the government's responsibility in the course of events that led to the closure of the airline, pointing out in turn the complexity of the matter and the final result as a "loss of value for the Uruguayan people."

This loss, according to the former president, contrasts painfully with other situations in which state interventions, such as the recapitalization of the Mortgage Bank, implied significant costs for the public treasury but entailed redistributions of benefits at the national level. The liquidation of Pluna, on the other hand, is perceived as a net loss, with no return for Uruguayan society, which accentuates Mujica's regret in the face of this outcome.
